Georgetown is a city in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex and is located on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. The city was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1837 and named for Georgetown University, which had been founded nearby in 1824. The first Europeans to arrive in Georgetown were Frenchmen who landed on an island in what is now Buffalo Bayou on November 12, 1768. They named their settlement after Jean-Baptiste de Lafayette, then governor of Louisiana and one of Napoleon's generals during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). French traders arrived soon after and built trading posts along Buffalo Bayou. In 1837, Scottish-Irish settlers from County Wexford landed simultaneously with these European newcomers and names were given to both groups accordingly: Georgetown (from Gaelic "guala" meaning "place") became the capital of Webb County; Carrol Hill became the county seat; Laclede Avenue was renamed Main Street; 5th Avenue became Washington Avenue; 4th Avenue became Elm Street; 2nd Avenue becomes Houston Street. By 1860, only 300 residents remained living within present day Georgetown proper while over 10,000 people lived within its environs as well as numerous small villages dotting its periphery. Growth throughout this period was due largely to annexation by Dallas subsequent to Texas' admission into the Union on January 3rd of that year. During World War II many locals worked for American manufacturing companies such as Lockheed Martin or Boeing Air Force Base(now Kirtland AFB) supplying parts for munitions production across America During post-war years many local businesses closed but new ones began up including several restaurants/cafés/bars/marketplaces In recent years downtown redevelopment has accelerated with large mixed use buildings being erected along Seventh Ave., just east of I-35W streets leading into downtown from Airport Blvd./I-635A
On October 8, 1836, Georgetown was founded by James Polk and his father-in-law, Sam Houston. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Texas River. In 1849, it became a county seat and was renamed Houston. On December 15 of that year, it gained statehood as a republic and became an official city on December 16.
