Gatesville, Texas is a small town located in Gates County, Texas. The community was founded by John D. Rockefeller and his brother-in-law, James Buchanan Gates. The city was named after John D. Rockefeller's youngest son, Nathaniel Gates. The initial population of the city was just over 100 people when it was founded in 1902. By 1907, the population had increased to about 2200 residents and by 1912 it had reached 4000 residents. In 1920, the oil refinery in Gatesville closed and the town lost its economic significance; however, it has since regained some of its former glory as a tourist destination for scopes enthusiasts around the country.

Gatesville is located on the Brazos River and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first European tosight Gatesville was by Jedediah Bogan in 1814 during his survey of the Texas coast. In 1836, Colonel James Bowie and Company of Rangers founded Bowie Rancho de las Flores near present day Gatesville after raiding Mexican settlements along the Rio Grande. The original settlers were men from Illinois who had been recruited to help build railroads across Texas. They named their rancho for General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit which had fought at Wilson's Creek in Mexico City on January 6, 1836. In 1840, William Denton established a claim along present day Brazos River just upstream from where Gatesville now stands. Denton named it "Gatesvil" after his friend and neighbor Thomas GATES (1792-1858). When Nacogdoches County was organized in 1850, GATES land lay within it and so he became its first county commissioner. In 1851 Danish immigrant Abel FREDERICKSON settled on some of what would become western Gatesvil Township . He started raising cattle and soon built a log cabin which served as his home until 1865 when he moved into what is now known as Gatehouse Station House Museum (). The early pioneer days are well documented through self-published history books still being sold today at local historical societies throughout central Texas including Gatehouse Station Museum (). Some interesting facts about Abel Fredricksson include that he immigrated to America via Sweden in 1848; owned 100 head of cattle when he arrived; became a successful farmer; donated land for college degrees for students from southern TX; also served as postmaster here from 1862 to 1865.; operated steamboat service between here & Georgetown (now Fort Worth) ; participated in many community activities including building several churches & schools hereabouts.; died unmarried in 1880 at age 85 years old having made numerous donations to various organizations back then (& still doing so today). Today Abel Fredricksson's namesake museum complex provides access to over 50 items dating back over 125 years documenting his life experiences & contributions toGatehouse Village - one of the most popular tourist destinations around!

In 1941, Gatesville was destroyed by a fire which burned for days after being set by local teenagers as part of a prank.

The town was named after Father George Washington Gates, who served as the first bishop of Houston. Gatesville grew quickly and saw considerable growth during the early days of the oil boom in Texas. In 1916, Gatesville became the seat of Hudspeth County when it was created from parts of Montague and Tyler Counties. The county courthouse and jail were built here in 1920.
