Gatesville is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. Gatesville was founded in 1886 by John Gates and his wife, Sarah Jane. It is named after John's older brother William H. Gates, who served as the first mayor of McLennan County. The townsite was only about two square miles when it was platted in 1886 and its growth has been largely due to agriculture and cattle ranching from the early days until recent years. Today, Gatesville is a vibrant city that provides many services to its residents including libraries, parks and shopping malls. Its economy also relies on service sector businesses such as information technology companies and health care providers.

By 1840, the population of Gatesville had increased to fifty residents. In 1849, the town was renamed for General Sam Houston after his victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto. In 1852, Gatesville built its first schoolhouse and began to sell goods and services to neighboring towns. The population of Gatesville continued to grow until it reached 1,000 residents by 1860. By 1865, the town had been destroyed by a fire that swept through it.

The town's first industry was the production of potteryware. In recent decades, Gatesville has become known for its arts and music scene which features various local bands and artists that play at various venues throughout the year including theGateway Arts Center & Banquet Hall which opened in 2004 and seats up to 500 people;Gateway Park which hosts various summer events such as swimming tournaments & concerts;and Gate City State Fairgrounds which offers exhibits, rides & shows throughout the week during July & August. In addition to its retail stores and restaurant options located near downtown Gatesville (including JB Bissinger's Claire's BBQ), there are several larger retailers within a few miles of town including Walmart Supercenter (just east of town off US 281), Lowe's Home Improvement Store (northwest of town on FM 587), Dollar General ($10 store open 24/7), KFC franchise (southwest corner of FM 587 near Lowes), Pizza Hut ($5 per slice) - all within a few miles of downtown gatesville!

Gatesville, Texas is a small town in southeastern McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. Gatesville is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in Gatesville were the Hays family who settled there in 1881. They came from Missouri and had two children, Nelson and Laura Hays. The next year Valentine Welch moved to Gatesville from Illinois with his family and began tanning leather. In 1882 he started a general store which became one of the most important businesses in Gatesville until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1907 Augie Wills founded Wills Bros., an accountancy firm that became well known throughout Austin for its work on contracts for various public institutions including UT (the University of Texas), Travis Park (now Travis Country Club), and City Hall Annex #2 (now GateHouse). The influx of Mexicans during the Mexican Revolution led to increased violence and economic insecurity in Gatesville; many taco restaurants opened up during this time as corridas de la patria (roughly translated as "turkey races"). On December 15, 1916 three men wearing masks robbed the bank located near what is now I-10 South between US 183 and 184 west of downtown Gatesville; they took $5,000 cash out of the vault before fleeing into Mexico. On January 1, 1921 Vernon Weldon opened Weldon's grocery store at 8016 E Highway 79 North in what is now GateHouse development adjacent to I-10 southbound Exit 239A near mile marker 191B. With its large garden section complete with fruit trees and vegetables, Weldon's gave early impetus toGateHouse subdivision development along I-10/US 183 east of downtown proper beginning around 1951 when gatesVILLE Boulevard was extended eastward from US 183 north towards I-10 exit 239A after numerous complaints about seedless grapes being available only at local farmers markets rather than through larger chains or stores such as Weldon's - groceries then becoming a rarity on East Side streetscape communities like gateHOUSE while still remaining accessible via drive thru lanes only long distance travelers could enjoy In 1984 Wills Bros.'s building burned down but not before leaving behind an extensive catalogued archive including photographs, drawings, engineering plans etcetera documenting both Austin business history prior to its incorporation as well as post WWI Texas commercial growth including some key hires by UT Chancellor James Murchison
Gatesville is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,309 at the 2010 census. Gatesville was founded in 1881 by John Gates and his son-in-law, Will Rogers. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer who died during the Indian Wars in 1876.
