Gatesville Shooting Target Holder History
Gatesville is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that lies on the banks of the Brazos River. The population was 5,552 at the 2010 census, up from 4,947 at the 2000 census. The Gatesville-Brazos County Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest in Texas and has an annual budget of $30 million. Gatesville is also home to Baylor University's Brackenridge School of Arts and Sciences and Trinity Health System's Baylor College Hospital. The first permanent settler in Gatesville was James Bledsoe who located his home on what is now Old Brazos Boulevard. He built a log cabin in 1836 and named it "Gatesville". Rivers Edge Company bought land adjacent to Bledsoe's cabin for $1 per acre (the equivalent of $14 today). In 1838, Jens Jensen purchased some additional land from Rivers Edge Company for $5 per acre (equivalent to $110 today). He named his new community "Gatesville" after John C. Gates, a wealthy New York senator who had invested in Bridges & Co., a cotton shipping company. In 1840, George Waco started farming near present day Gateways Road and built a house on what is now Waco Creek Drive. In 1846, Jesse Jameson settled west of present day Gateways Road with his family and began operations as an agriculturalist growing corn, beans, wheat and other crops along with raising hogs and cattle. Gatesville has been home to farmers and ranchers for many years and its economy is based largely on agriculture. The town's name comes from one of its early settlers, John Gates, who named it after his older brother George Washington Gates. One of the earliest things that Gatesville did was build a school in 1873. This school was the first in what would become Gatesville. There were also some log buildings built in the early days of Gatesville. By 1907, there were three stores and two blacksmith shops in town. A post office was established in 1911, and by 1915 there were four stores and two churches in town. In 1916, a railroad depot was built south of town; this depot would be used until it burned down in 1947. The first thing that people started to do hereabouts were farming and ranching activities which continued throughout most of the 20th century up until around 1970 when oil production began to increase throughout Texas commenced with increased gas prices driving rural Texans into cities looking for work or housing opportunities during these difficult times
The Gatesville community was founded in 1836 by Austin and Anna Gates. The town grew quickly, becoming a popular stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1853, the Mexican-American War led to an influx of refugees from Texas, and Gatesville became a center for the war effort. The community developed a strong military tradition, which continued into the post-war years. Gatesville also played a role in the development of early American ranching techniques.
