Gatesville, Texas is home to the oldest shooting range in the Lone Star State. The range was founded in 1892 by Colonel John M. Gates and was known as Gate's Ranch until it merged into the present-day Gatesville Rifle and Shotgun Range in 1923. Today, the rifle and shotgun ranges offer a wide variety of shooting experiences for visitors of all ages. The Gatesville Rifle and Shotgun Range has been an important part of Texas history since its founding. One of the original owners of the range was General Antonio L. Travis who used it as his private hunting ground. The current owners have continued to refurbish and expand therange which includes a 5200 sq ft target area, three Trap buildings, a 20-meter long pistol range, five 10-meter long rifle ranges, four 25-meter long rifle ranges, six 50-meter long rifle ranges, two 75-meter long rifle ranges, twenty 12g shotguns (four on each side), ten 100m targets (sixteen on each side), fifteen 120mm mortars (three on each side), five 15cm selfLoading Guns (two with barrels that reach up to 150 cm length) and twelve 70mm cannons (.50 caliber).

Gatesville is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located in northeastern Hidalgo County. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Gatesville is part of the San Antonio–Brazoria, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The name Gatesville comes from Rancho de la Garza (now part of Gatesville) and its original site was on a bend in the Brazos River near present-day Slaughtertown. The first permanent settler in Gatesville was Manuel Armijo, who arrived around 1836 with his family from Mexico City. He founded a ranch named La Garza about four miles northeast of present-day Gatesville on what is now White Oak Road. In 1839, Armijo's son José sold him the land to John Neely Cooke for $1,000 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha). Cooke renamed it Neely Manor after himself and his brother Nicholas Neely Jr., who had been president of the United States during its early years. In 1840, George Aiken bought one acre (0.40 ha) from Cooke for $5 ($100 today). Aiken built an adobe house there that became known as "Aiken's Fort". By 1850, he had also purchased 2 more acres (0.80 ha), which he used for pasture and later grew corn and cotton crops; he also built a blacksmith shop and store there. By 1860, most of what is now Gatesville had been developed as residential areas: Aiken's Fort became known as "Gatesvilie" while Ansonia Gassaway obtained title to 1/2 mile east of Gatevilie along FM 522 before subdivided into lots that were sold to soldiers stationed at Camp Bowie during Reconstruction period (1886-1913). Most development stopped when World War I began; only Eastgate subdivision remained until it was annexed bySan Antonio in 1931. In 1870s Jens Jensen established a small bakery here which continued operation until 1925; by this time many other businesses had opened up including several banks and some ran into difficulty due to changing trends in American agricultural production during those years.
