The Gatesville community was founded in 1892 by George and Sarah Gates. The Gates family built a log cabin on the banks of the Brazos River. In 1907, they moved to a more permanent home and started a grocery store in the town square. The store operated for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1951. Gate's heirs continued to operate the store as a convenience store until it closed in 1990.
