The town was founded in 1881 by George Gates and his family as a cattle ranching community. In 1919, Gatesville became an agricultural center with the arrival of the Pabst Brewing Company. The company Supported a large number of local farmers and their families until it closed its doors in 1978. In 1980, Gatesville residents voted to incorporate as a city. According to the 2010 Census, Gatesville has a total land area of just over square miles, making it one of the smallest towns in Texana County by total land area. The town located on both sides of U.S.-75 between Grandview and Decatur Streets was founded in 1881 when John C. Gates, an American claimsman and oil explorer from Nevada City, California, arrived in Texas with his family to claim what he thought were cattle ranges that had been bought by Indian tribes near his home city of Reno Nevada. The original town plat was never approved by then-Mayor Jno Hagin and so Gatesville consisted only of a few plank buildings scattered around some wells that Mr. Gates had drilled for oil exploration purposes and also for irrigation water use on what would become known as Rancho Doniphan south of present day Decatur Street. When Mr. Hagin left office after being elected sheriff of Texana County in 1886 he sold all surface rights to Mr.) Crown Oil Company (later ExxonMobil) for $2 million cash which made Gatesville an important center for oil production throughout the state during the 1890s until leases ran out or were surrendered by operators due to technological advances such as hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Gatesville is located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Gatesville was founded in 1879 by General James W. Gates and his wife Lillie. The town grew quickly due to its location on a branch of the White Oak River and its access to water resources. By 1886, Gatesville had a post office, hotel, school, and railroad station. In 1889, Gatesville became the county seat of Hudspeth County after it was chosen over Springdale because of its larger population size. The town remained the county seat until 1907 when Austin began to grow rapidly and took control of Hudspeth County government.
