Gatesville, Texas is a city in Gates County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gates County. The community was named for General John A. Gates, who served as an officer in Mexican War and as governor of Texas during Reconstruction. The first post office in Gatesville was founded on November 17, 1869 by Hiram Ketchum with a mailing address of "Pine Grove". On October 1, 1877, the town changed its name to "Gatesville" after General John A. Gates when he became the district judge for that area of central Texas. The first store in Gatesville opened on December 12, 1888 at 302 Main Street (later renamed Broadway). In 1893, the first school opened in Gatesville and it remained open until 1957 when it moved to what is now called Eastgate Elementary School. In 1903-04 there were plans to build a water tower but nothing came of it because no money was available from private individuals or businesses interested in helping finance the project. However on March 26th 1904 local citizens raised $5 from their doors to help pave way for a new water tower that would soon be built by local contractor Jens Jensen & Sons Incorporated despite initial protests from some residents about how this type of investment could benefit only themselves rather than the community as a whole .
