Gatesville is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. Gatesville is located on the banks of the Trinity River and near its confluence with the Brazos River. The land that now makes up Gatesville was first settled by Scots-Irish people who arrived in what is now Medina County in 1836. By 1840, most of the Scots-Irish had moved away from their original homeland of Ulster in Northern Ireland and were living in what is now Delaware County, Pennsylvania. A group of Englishmen named John Cranch came to Gatesville in 1845 and began to clear land for a farmstead they called "Cranch's Grove." In 1846, Lane Cranch donated land to Gatesville for a public school. When Gentry offered $1 million for development rights on the site of present-day Gatesville, Lane Cranch agreed to donate additional land (now part of east Medina), which became known as "Gentry's Ranch". In 1861, William Hogg purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) along the Trinity River from Lane Cranch for $150 per acre. Hogg recognized an opportunity to develop this valuable real estate and set out to make it a center for farming and ranching operations. He made arrangements with other local farmers and ranchers to establish cooperative barnyards that would help provide milk products for his cattle and promote his ranching methods. This system grew into what is still known today as Gate City Farms Cooperative Extension Service
