Gatesville was founded in 1846 by John Gates and his family. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had come to Texas in 1836 to help owner of the land, also John Gates, fight a Mexican war. When the war ended, Houston awarded Gatesville to him in recognition of his bravery. The Grants moved into the town in 1848 and started a cotton plantation that became one of the largest in Texas. In 1861, after Confederate soldiers burned down their home near Gatesville, the Grants relocated to nearby Arlington Heights and adopted the name "Gatesville" after their new home. They continued to live there until they died in 1907. Gate's heirs sold the property in 1917 and it became part of Arlington Heights Cemetery.
