Gatesville is a small town in Gates County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first guns in Gatesville were made by local farmers and ranchers around 1875. Ammunition for these early rifles and pistols was gathered from nearby woods and fields. A gunsmith who lived in Gatesville began making firearms in 1895. The first handguns were also made here starting in 1907. By 1912, all of the gunsmiths had closed down due to World War I prohibitionism and lack of demand for firearms during the war years. In 1934, the old Hammond Post Office building became home to the Gatesville Rifle Club which offered membership to anyone who could shoot a rifle or pistol with a 3 inch barrel or better at 100 yards (90 meters). This club served as both meeting place and storage for equipment until it vacated its property in 1984 when it moved into new facilities on US Highway 175 near present day Duncanville. Today, Gate City Gun Clubs still meets monthly at the post office building where members can shoot rifles and pistols using any type of barrel up to .50 caliber with a muzzle velocity over .410 inches per second These meetings are open to anyone interested in learning more about rifle shooting or Pistol Shooting

Gatesville was founded in 1868 by Major George P. Gates and his family as an agricultural community on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first settlers were Major George P. Gates and his wife Fannie A. Gates, who arrived in 1868 from Illinois with their two children, George Washington (1869-1937) and Betty Belle (1870-1963). The GATES FAMILY has resided in Gatesville since that time and are buried there alongside other pioneer residents such as Hiram Deeds (1795-1872), John Hogg (1797-1856), Jens Rasmussen (1800-1859), Martin Luther King Jr.'s father Dr. Jesse Jackson Sr.(died 1984), Wanda Edwards (born 1951), and others! In 1870, Majors James Crouch and Abel Tarrant organized a wagon train from Wichita Falls to Palestine which transported goods up the Arkansas River to Wichita Falls for shipment downriver to Fort Worth via ship. This event marked the beginning of what would become known as Old Wichita Falls & Fort Worth Railway Company which operated until 1917 inclusive! The route passed through present day Gatesville along today's US 281 corridor before terminating at milepost 9 near Palestine! In 1901, local citizens petitioned the state legislature to form a new incorporated village within Johnson County named after General William Tecumseh Sherman - "Gatesville" meaning "place where rivers meet". On November 3rd of that year - General Sherman's birthday - Representatives from Johnson County met at adjournment of their regular session in present day gatesville to recommend incorporation into an ordinance under which name it was formally adopted on December 1st! gatesville became a municipality on January 1st 1902!!! It should be noted that this occurred just prior to Johnson County becoming one unit pursuant to the 1890 Texas Constitution creating county government!! This brief history does not do justice unto this richly endowed town located withinJohnsonCounty limits; suffice it hereto say that yet another era has come full circle forGatevillians when they commemorate many historical moments throughout our lifetime.....

It became a ville in 1848. Gatesville was named for Andrew Jackson Gates, who served as U.S. Representative from Texas from 1841 to 1845 and as Secretary of War under Polk.
