In 1829, Daniel Boone crossed the Red River and explored what would become Gatesville. On October 16, 1830, Jedediah Smith discovered gold in what is now Briscoe County and named it for him. The name change probably occurred because of pressure from settlers who wanted to use the same name as their new discovery in Texas. In 1836 Alexander Henderson arrived in San Antonio with his family from Kentucky and began building a house on Broadway near present day Mission Road. Mr. Henderson's wife Elizabeth died soon after giving birth to them two boys: George Washington (now Easton) and John Taylor Henderson Sr.. George Washington became one of San Antonio's most successful merchants and served as mayor from 1851-1857 and 1861-1865; he also founded the first bank in San Antonio . John Taylor Henderson Sr., known as "Jed" or "JP," served as treasurer of Starr County from 1865-68 before moving to Austin where he founded the first general store west of Houston in 1870 . After JP's death in 1880, his son John Taylor Henderson Jr., took over as owner/manager of JTH&H until its liquidation in 1978 which left JR with an ownership interest share worth $1 billion when it finally went public that year
