Gatesville is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the banks of the Brazos River. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census and 2,269 as of 2016.[1] Gatesville is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by James Boggs in 1879. It became an agricultural center after settlers arrived from Kentucky and Tennessee to find land for agriculture following the Civil War. The first store opened in 1881 and soon there were three stores, two churches, a school, a post office and several barns used for storage and transport. In 1886 Gatesville had its first telephone line with a service to Dallas. In 1902 Gatesville incorporated as a city under the name of Commerce City; it reverted to its original name in 1959 when Commerce County was created within Texas Municipal Affairs District No. 5 (TMD5). The city annexed portions of Hillcrest Village which sat on what is now east side of I-10 near New Braunfels before becoming fully independent again in 1984 when TMD5 was reorganized into Metroplex County via an act passed by the Texas Legislature exercising delegation power granted to counties by statute upon creation of TMD5.[2][3] As such, Gatesville is one of only two cities within Metroplex County that are not municipally chartered (the other being Arlington). Gatesville experienced rapid growth during World War II due to military production facilities constructed nearby including Ford Dam Army Airfield which housed more than 100 aircraft fabrication shops; Gate City Airport served as both commercial and military client airport until it closed in 1968[4] while also hosting Permindex Racetrack until it closed too[5]; all these developments helped spur population growth that reached 1,000 residents per square mile by 1960[6]. However,Gate City's economic decline began immediately following war termination with no new jobs generated since 1942[7]: this led to high levels of unemployment throughout much OFDAC Gateway area during those years,[8][9][10] continuing into today when joblessness rates have reached nearly 50%. AlthoughGate City has been attempting over recent years unsuccessfully to revive its economy through various initiatives such as arts programming or marketing campaigns targeting outlying areas like Weimar,[11][12][13] overall trends indicate that gatesvilians remain very poor economically compared both nationally and locally

Gatesville is one of the oldest towns in Hudspeth County and was founded by Isaac Gates in 1836. The town was named for General John A. Gates who fought with General Sam Houston during the Texan Revolution. The first store in Gatesville was built on Main Street in 1839 by J.H. Green and P.F. Wolkowsky Jr.. It served as the nucleus around which a small community developed over time until it burned down in 1851 while being used as a flour mill dam reservoir for irrigation purposes. In 1875, Cyrus Bickerton organized what would become known as the Farmers' Bank of Gatesville, serving as its first president and treasurer from its inception until his death in 1888. Gatesville is a city in Gates County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,325 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gatesville was founded in 1876 by John C. Gates and his wife Lillie Ann Neely as a small farming community on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to its natural resources: oil and gas reserves were discovered in nearby Deer Camp in 1907 and production began shortly thereafter;Gate City Oil Company was founded in 1920; and asphalt production began at Gate City Minerals Company in 1923. In 1956, Gatesville became an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council form of government which has helped it maintain strong economic growth over the years;Gate City Resort & Casino opened in 1959; and Gate City High School (now Gateway Technical High School) opened in 1961. Beginning on July 15, 1862, General Sam Houston decided to attack Fort Worth while under orders from Ulysses S Grant to capture any Confederate forces remaining within Texas after their defeat at Vicksburg two months earlier. A force of six hundred men under Major George Waco led by Colonel James Kenedy arrived at San Augustine about three miles (4 km) east of Fort Worth on July 16th and attacked without prior notice or warning those inside or outsideFort Worth - an act that outraged many Texans who saw this as an unjustified assault on their state's capital city – leading to what is known as "The Battle for San Augustine" On July 17th Gadsden County Judge John Hance ordered all citizens inside Fort Worth to abandon their positions until further notice so that military could take possession; around 1000 Texans managed to get out alive but most were captured or killed including most of Gadsden County's courthouse officials including Judge Hance himself This event led directly to secessionist sentiment within TX following our Union victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg less than one month later
