In 1886, Gatesville became an incorporated town and changed its name to "Gatesville". On October 15, 1916, during World War I, Gatesville served as a troop stop on the Santa Fe Railway between Fort Worth and Wichita Falls. After the war ended in 1919, GatesVILLE reverted back to its original name of Gatesville on December 1st. The city experienced growth from its early days until around 1950 when it reached its current size thanks to oil production that began in nearby Eagle Ford Oil Field. Business boomed as people came to work in what would become one of Texas' most fecund cities -Gateway International Airport now lies just outside of town limits adjacent to Shell Refinery Complex and other major employers like Mary Kay Cosmetics Company sit within easy reach for both locals and visitors alike. [1] As Gate City grew so did its infrastructure; Streets were laid out according to grid pattern while water systems were improved significantly starting in the late 1940s (the first flush toilet facility opened in Gate City in 1951). By 1970s residents had built new homes on top of older warehouses which still remain standing today near Center Streetgate. [2] However some industries that have left lasting impression upon Gateway City include manufacturing (such as Briggs Electric) and heavy oil refining (like ExxonMobil).
