Gatesville is a small town in Texas, located about 25 miles west of Dallas. The population was 1,437 at the 2000 census. Gatesville is named after General George Washington and his family who were forced to leave Virginia during the American Revolution. The first permanent settler in Gatesville was John White, who arrived in 1836. In 1840, German immigrant Wilhelm Pohl established a farmstead on the east side of town. Pohl later sold his land to Hermann Doerffer and Isaac Wirth, who founded Wirth-Doerfferptyke lumberyard in 1851. In 1875, J.C. Bigham established a grocery store and post office in what is now downtown Gatesville. The business continued until 1924 when it merged with the nearby Hudspeth Store Co.. Bigham became an early investor in the city's growth and served as its first mayor from 1902 to 1904 and 1915 to 1917. During World War II, Gatesville played an important role as one of several military airfields serving DFW Airport (now Fort Worth MacArthur International Airport). This included providing housing for bomber pilots and their families during their training flights over Dallas-Fort Worth during that time period;Gateway Airport closed following World War II but reopened as Gate City Regional Airport three years later due to advances in technology which made flying more accessible than ever before
