In 1907, Wm Burch Launched his company that would become one of the most well-known firearms manufacturers in America today. By 1922, John Moulton had also founded his business within the town limits which would grow into one of largest arms dealers in Gatesville with over 150 employees
Gatesville is a town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Gatesville is located on the Brazos River at (30.738411, -95.324922).
The first permanent settler in Gatesville was James Auld, who arrived in 1836. At the time of his arrival, Gatesville was part of Nacogdoches County and its seat was Nacogdoches. Auld engaged in cattle farming and shipping until the early 1840s when he moved to what is now Midlothian County and began growing corn and cotton. In 1845 he opened a store at what is now downtown Gatesville; it remains one of the town's most important businesses to this day.
In 1881 John Fenton opened a grocery store on Main Street which became one of the largest grocery stores west of Dallas/Fort Worth until it closed in 1955. The post office called Gatesville "Fenton's Landing" from 1886 to 1907; however, this name has no real connection toGateville today.
In 1906 William Hickey founded J Hickey & Son Lumber Co., which still exists as a lumber company with branches throughout West Texas and Oklahoma City area today. In 1915 Harry Wertheimer set up Wertheimer Bros., an insurance company that continues today as one of Texas' largest. JHickey’s grandson Donald Wertheimer founded Wernham’s Mercantile Company in 1980 which operates as one of Texarkana’s two leading department stores.
