Gatesville, Texas was founded in 1879 by J.D. Gates and his family. Gatesville became a center for the firearms industry due to its location at the junction of two major roadways, the Santa Fe Trail and the Houston Turnpike. The city's proximity to both roads made it an ideal place to manufacture firearms and other items used in hunting and rural subsistence lifestyles. In 1907, Gate's son, Dr. J.D. Gates Jr., opened up his own armory in Gatesville and began producing assault rifles for the military during World War I. The guns produced by Dr. Gates were well-received by American soldiers and helped contribute to America's victory in that war. After World War I, Dr. Gates moved his armory to Fort Worth, Texas where he continued producing assault rifles for the U.S military until his death in 1948 In 1955, John Waddell offered 1 million dollars towards the development of a handgun that would be both accurate and reliable enough to be carried into battle by regular soldiers as well as law enforcement officers such as those found operating on horseback or using shotguns while wearing hatsamoto
