The Town of Gatesville was founded in 1849 by Captain John Smeaton as a trading post on the White Oak River. In 1875, John W. Gates became owner and builder of what is now the first commercial building in Gatesville. The following year, he built and opened a general store which became one of the town's most popular attractions for merchants and residents alike. In 1898, Mrs. Anna Ladd Gates donated land to form what is now downtown Gatesville square; this area includes parts of present day State Street, Main Street, and West Broadway Streets as well as several other buildings including the old bank building (now home to First Baptist Church) and courthouse (now used as apartments). It also contains many period Adobe Walls from around that time period. In 1907, Drury Lane Theatre opened in downtown Gatesville - one of America's earliest movie theaters! That same year saw the founding of the first school in town - The DeMoss School which operated until 1915 when it moved to its current location across from First Baptist Church on State Avenue SE. The original school building still stands today - an excellent example of Territorial architecture! A large number of businesses were consolidated into one company during World War II when Mr./Ms.. Lamar & Sons took over all aspects marketing goods to servicemen stationed overseas through their GASCO Trading Company Unit No 1; they remain active today as Lamar’s Grains Markets Incorporated with locations throughout Tarrant County! In 1946 local man Jens Hansen started raising cattle here on his 640 acres east of town; gates ranches continue to be important not just in agriculture but also ranching/hunting opportunities within easy driving distance for many families today! Gatesville was founded by James Gates in 1847 as a farming community near the present day town of Callahan. The original town had a population of only twenty-five people. In 1840, Gatesville became the capital of the Republic of Texas and served as the seat of government until its relocation to Austin in 1845. The cornerstone for the current Gatesvilley courthouse was laid on October 15, 1851, and it opened on November 1, 1851. The first post office in Gatesville was established on October 12, 1850. The first store in Gatesville was built on December 14, 1850 by Isaac Newton and his wife Eliza. By 1860, there were six stores in Gatesville with a total population of fifty-two people. After annexation by Austin in 1870, Gatesville lost its status as the capital and began to decline as a commercial center. However, it remained an important agricultural community until after World War II when it became primarily a residential area. Today, gatesVILLE is known for its cattle ranching industry which has helped support many small businesses throughout its history.
Gatesville was founded in 1836 by John Gates and his wife Jane. The present day town was named for John Gates and the neighboring creek, which became known as the Gatesville Creek. In 1876, John Gentry purchased the land from the Gates family. The Gentry family built a large ranch house on their property that still stands today. In 1907, J.W. "Jock" Heilman arrived in Gatesville and began working at the local grain elevator. He later opened his own grocery store in 1923 and served as mayor of Gatesville from 1951 to 1957. In 1957, he donated land to create a city park in what is now downtown Gatesville. The city of Gatesville was incorporated on March 15, 1959, and its first mayor was Wanda Lowe-Fenton. On December 3, 1961, Mayor Lowe-Fenton passed away after a long battle with cancer. She is buried atNavarro County Memorial Park in gatesville TX
