Gatesville is a town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Gatesville is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The first settler in Gatesville was Hugh Hargrave. He and his family moved to Gatesville from Illinois in 1873. In 1887, John Denton founded the Denton Coal and Coke Company with two square miles of land on Red River near present-day Gatesville. Denton named his company after George Washington Carver and James Buchanan Bryan (1828-1912), both friends of his father-in-law, Sam Houston. A year later, Denton donated 3 acres (1 km2) of land to the Gatesville School District for use as a school site. In 1892, pioneer Willis Capps established a grocery store and restaurant called "Capps' Store." The store was built on what is now Main Street between Brushy Creek Road and Indianola Drive. Another early business activity in Gatesville was the founding of the Gadsden Telephone Company on October 25, 1912 by local entrepreneur Wm., E.] Stephenson and Cyrus Kistiakowsky (1868-1947). Gatesville is a town in McAllen County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,838 at the 2010 census. Gatesville is the county seat of McAllen County. The town was founded in 1879 by John Gates and his wife Anna. It developed as a cotton plantation town and later became a bedroom community for the city of McAllen. In 2001, Gatesville annexed part of neighboring Lajitas, making it one municipality with two official languages: Spanish and English. The town was first settled by Texans who arrived in 1836 as part of the Mexican–American War effort to protect General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna from being captured or murdered by Mexico's forces. By 1840, most of what is now Gatesville had been erected on the site of an old cotton gin (now known as Gate City Cemetery). A post office called Gatesville was established in 1841, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1881, John Gates bought 1/2 mile (1 km) east of present-day Gatesville some 30 acres (12 ha) of land that he donated to establish what would become his new town. Sherman, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas. The Gates family built a ranch near the town, which became a major center for cattle Ranching in Gate County. In 1907, Gatesville was annexed by Austin and became part of the new city. Today, Gatesville is a small community located just east of Austin on I-35.
