Gatesville is a small town in southeast Texas, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. Gatesville takes its name from General John A. Grant who fought in the Mexican-American War and became an hero in the area. The town was founded by Judge James Gentry in 1873 as a base of operations for his cattle drives through what is now Chambers County. The first store in Gatesville opened on Main Street on November 13, 1873. In 1896, Gatesville's first school opened and served grades one through twelve; it still does so today. On January 17, 1902, Major General Arthur MacArthur entered into an agreement with Mexico to annex Chihuahua into the United States; this led to territorial disputes between Chihuahua and Texas over land located within present-day Gatesville limits. On February 3, 1907–the day after Mexican President Porfirio Diaz’s inauguration–a fire destroyed 16 buildings west of downtown due to faulty lighting wiring; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of downtown Gatesville’s decline and make it one of the most difficult towns ever hit by a natural disaster (although some claim that it actually started declining shortly before that). In 1926–just prior to Interstate 10 being built through central Chambers County–Gatesville had its only tornado outbreak when four homes were damaged by winds measuring just under 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers/h). According to historical records there have been no other major tornadoes or storms events occurin Gate City since then! Gate City has slowly but surely regained its former prominence as a commercial center for southeastern Texas with heavy industry such as chemical plants moving out during later decades while new businesses have sprung up aroundtown like restaurants, attractions and health care services trying to keep pace with changes outside of their core city boundaries; however some residents do continue nostalgically living away from all modernity citing environmental concerns about oil spills near fracking sites deep within their town limits while also feeling disconnected from world events happening more than 500 miles away via satellite television or social media networks

Gatesville had a post office from 1901 to 1907. In 1957, it was renamed to honor Elias and Anna Gates' grandson, Bill Gates III.
