Annie and I went to Gatesville, Texas, in the early 1800s to visit my father. Gatesville was then a small town of about 1,000 people. Ammo production started here in 1892, when two brothers named John and Amos Gates started a small Ammunition Company. The company grew rapidly, and by 1907 it had become one of the largest producers of ammunition in the United States. In 1912, John Gates passed away; his brother Amos took over the company and continued to produce high-quality ammo until his death in 1942. After Amos' death, the company was passed down through three generations of family members before it became part of S&W firearms Corporation in 1987. Today, S&W ammunition products are manufactured at their plant located in Memphis, Tennessee. The history of ammo production is long and varied. From rifles that fired shotcrete rounds to handguns that used ballistics data to fire projectiles that could penetrate armor plate, ammo has been an essential component of warfare for centuries. Even today, ammunition remains an important part of American culture and society. Gatesville, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 3,531 at the 2010 census. Gatesville was founded by John Gates on November 12, 1881. It first appeared on maps as Gatesville and later changed its name to Gatesville proper on August 29, 1907. On January 21, 1915 the town incorporated and took its present name. The current mayor is Wendell Dunn. The town's history began with John Gates who came to the area in 1881 from Illinois after serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. At that time, only a few miles distant from what would become Gatesville, General James Fenton built his own rancho on Richland Creek which he named Oaks Park after his family's old home in Illinois. By 1886 however, Fenton had sold all of his holdings including Oak Park to JF Morrow who then renamed it "Gatesville". In 1893 Gentry dairyman Robert Evers purchased part of FM 620 from A&W Railroad Company president and general manager Lewis Sibley for $2,000 cash and donated it to local farmers for use as their grazing land for cows and hogs which soon became known as "Everson's Farmstead". In 1907 when Gatesvillians decided they wanted their own post office to replace letters sent out by mail (at that time service was provided by railroad carriers), a meeting was held to discuss plans. After much discussion it was decided that a new Post Office should be built on Second Street between Elm and Holly Streets which would serve both the townspeople and those living nearby on Richards Branch Rd.. The cornerstone for this new building was laid on October 5th of that year by Mrs Geo Ransom (wife of one ofGRAMs early settlers) with Reverends Wm Broughton & Geo Ransom officiating. ensuing ceremonies included an auction of property items donated by citizens including wagon wheels & saddles used by livestock herders etc., farm tools , bed frames made from logs taken down during winter storms etc., dishes made from pottery shards found lying aroundGateway while most were destroyed during storm surge flooding caused December 25-26 1948 when river peaked at #1 recorded ever! The first mail carrier arrived at this new location just before Christmas 1898!!!!! On July 1st 1951 the last steam locomotive pulled into Gateway Depot having been retired from service many years earlier due to age or mechanical failures; this event also marked end of era for railroads serving Gateway area!!Gateway residents enjoyed many years without daily traffic coming through their community until fairly recently when Interstate 10 interrupted commuters travelling southbound thru Hudspeth County !! Gate City Merchants continue selling groceries/ hardware/Lawn Mowers/etc directto consumers today!!!
Gatesville was founded in 1848 by John Gates and his brother, James. The town grew rapidly due to the discovery of oil in nearby Bandera County. In 1872, Gatesville became a city and was named for John Gates. The first mayor of Gatesville was Wm. H. Stephenson. In 1928, the city annexed the neighboring town of San Marcos.
