Garland, Texas is a small town in Kerr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,558 at the 2010 census. Garland's downtown was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The first residents of what is now Garland were pioneers who arrived around 1836 and named their new settlement "Houston". From this location they founded the Houston Independent School District and developed other industries such as lumbering, farming, and manufacturing. In the early 20th century there was an increase in oil production in nearby Midland and Fort Bend counties so Garland became known as "the Oil Capital of Texas". In 1928 Garland incorporated as a city with a population of 592. It experienced rapid growth during World War II due to defense industry jobs created by the American military presence in the area. By 1950 it had reached its current size with a population of 2,451. Growth halted during the late 1960s when energy prices began to decline and some companies left town for newer locations. Since then however, growth has been steady with the current population standing at 2,611 according to the 2010 census
Garland, Texas was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his family. The town became an important center of the Texas Revolution due to its location on the border of Mexico and Texas. The town was also a major center for cotton production during the early 1800s.
