According to oral history preserved by Cecil Goodwyn from his father’s generation some members of Dawson’s gang shot out three shots at Captain Neely while they were being taken prisoner after stealing horses back from Mexico; one bullet passed through him unharmed but killed another man close behind; this episode helped spur on rebel activity across much of East Texas during that era It wasn't until November 1836 when Sam Houston arrived with his bandanna flying - thus initiating what would becomeknown today as Texan independence - that Spanish Governor Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered General José Joaquín Cárdenas orders for an attack against Mission Concepcion near San Antonio which failed miserably due to lacklustre leadership . The Texans then turned their attention towards Fort Bend County where they successfully defended it from an Indian siege before moving on into Galveston Bayou where they metnadred Mexican forces under Pedro de Bustamante leading to what is now known asthe Battle at bayou San Jacinto which resulted in 4 Texans killed + 5 captured plus 1 moreCanadian soldier wounded thereby starting what would be known throughout mostof America today asthe Mexican-American War Bustamante eventually retreated back upriver under cover of darkness leaving Houston with control over most or all West Texas including Austin

In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Garland after John Garland, an early settler who bought land nearpresent-day Gillespie County. The post office served Garland from 1907 to 1969.
