Garland, Texas is a small town in Midland County, Texas. It was founded in 1876 by John Garland and his wife Anna. The town was named after General James K. Polk, the 26th president of the United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 730 people. The first settlers to Garland were horses and mules who came overland from Missouri. They started a trading post on the Brazos River in what is now known as downtown Garland. In 1879, they founded a borough within Midland County called Garland Heights which had a landowning family as its mayor and trustees. In 1902, the city of Dallas annexed most of Midland County and portions of Harris County including Garland Township for $2 million dollars (the county's then-largest appropriation ever). At that time, Dallas offered to annex any municipality that wanted to be included in its expanding city limits – something that didn't happen until 1959 when Arlington became a part of Dallas and Garland Township lost all its autonomy). The citizens of Garland petitioned for annexation intoDallas on several occasions but each effort failed due to lack of support from local leaders in Dallas. Eventually, Mayor George Hynes decided to annex Garner himself rather than wait for an out-of-towner to come up with an acceptable plan for annexation since he felt that it would only take two years for Garner's population to reach 100% growth potential if annexed byDallas proper – something which never happened despite multiple requests from Mayor Hynes throughout the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, much like other small towns across America who become wartime factories through federal contracts or military enlistment quotas, residents decided to work hard during the war effort instead of relax at home; this led to increased business activity around downtown where stores such as J C Penney opened up shop during peacetime while many businesses closed down during wartime because they couldn't get government contracts or military enlistment quotas due to tight regulations put into place by Roosevelt’s New Deal administration. After 1945 ended hostilities global immigration decreased which lead some businesses owners deciding not reopen their doors due original plans didn’t pan out; however most locals continued working odd jobs outside their homes throughout those years continuing cultural traditions such as hosting country music concerts at local honky tonks or selling handmade crafts at market stalls throughout town year round
