However, this did not stop locals from trying to make their mark on their community through volunteerISM (the Garland Independent School District) or from starting businesses such as a grocery store, library, hotel, bank, post office and more; all while working hard to provide services that would benefit all members of their community including children living near by who could no longer attend public schools because they were too far away for tuition costs alone!
