In 1925, the city annexed what was then rural Holt County. Today, Garland is a thriving metropolis with a diverse population that includes people from all over North America. The early history of Garland is intertwined with that of nearby Dallas. Both cities were founded by Texans who had served in the Mexican-American War and subsequent Texan independence campaigns against Mexico. The first residents of Garland were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1835. They built log homes on land that they donated to the city government. The first post office in town was established in 1837, and it remained in operation until 1923. During its formative years, Garland experienced various industrializations which have left their mark on present day society. One such development was oil production which began to take hold at approximately this time as well as other businesses including meatpacking plants and cotton ginners (dye mills). Cotton ginning played an especially significant role in Garner’s economy due to its high demand for localendered dye products during World War I and II (Foley Bros., 1946; Ruebenfeldt & Powers 1986; Weisberg 1990). Notable landmarks associated with this period include Second Baptist Church (1911), First Methodist Episcopal Church (1895), Main Street Bridge (1926), Holt County Courthouse Annex (1927), and current City Hall building (1974). Engineering firms such as Bechtel Corporation and Parsons Brinckerhoff are also major proponents of local commerce within town limits today thanks to heavy investment throughout much of downtown Garndon Heights dating back to at least 1960s when these firms redeveloped several blocks southwest along Elm Street between South Lamar Boulevard/Winthrop Drive/Garndon Road/University Avenue into one large business district known today as YoungLife Plaza/. This redevelopment occurred despite objections from some community members who alleged that massive new buildings were being erected without proper public input or consideration for adjacent neighborhoods which had long harbored similar concerns about their impact on quality of life both inside and outside their borders
