The first handgun case was in 1868 when John Wesley Hardin shot and killed five people at a rodeo in Texarkana, Texas. This was the first instance of a handgun being used in an murder-suicide. In 1935, two gunmen opened fire on a crowd of spectators at the California Speedway near Simi Valley. One gunman died from gunshot wounds while the other survived and was sentenced to life in prison without parole for his role in the shooting rampage. In 1966, Charles Manson committed three murders with shotguns while he was living at Radley Manor outside Los Angeles. These were the first instances of shotgun homicides by members of a gang or family member within the United States. In 1981, Timothy McVeigh committed suicide with an assault rifle after bombing federal buildings in Oklahoma City.
