Garland, Texas is a city located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 346,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the DFW-TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of guns in Garland can be traced back to 1892 when one man, A.W. Garretson, began providing firearms and ammunition to settlers in what is now Garland County. He started out selling shotguns and later rifles from his home on Garland Avenue. About 1912, Garretson donated a rifle to the local police department for use by law enforcement officers. In 1916, he donated a .22 caliber rifle to the city of Arlington Heights for its police department; this became the first gun ever given to Arlington Heights as a gift. In 1924, Wm Hargrave founded Hargrave Arms & Ammunition Company in Garland with help from Garretons son Allan Garretson Sr.. The company produced pistols and revolvers until it was sold off in 1961 to Noreen’s Firearms Inc.. This company continued producing handguns until it was sold off again in 1978 to J&R Gunsmiths Inc.. That company continued making handguns until 1987 when they merged with Smith & Wesson Corporation’s Firearms Division (nowSmith & Wesson Defense LLC). At that time, Garland became just one of many cities within Smith & Wesson’s firearms division – across America – which included Reno, Nev., Chicago, Ill., and Baltimore among others. From 1987 through 2003 (during which time Smith & Wesson Defense LLC was based out of Fort Worth), GARLAND GUNS CO., LTD., operated as primary arms manufacturer for Smith & Wesson Firearms Division (now Smith & WessonDefense LLC) inside of an old industrial building on Main Street in downtown Fort Worth….. GARLAND GUNS CO., LTD manufactured both assault rifles and pistols under contract directly with law enforcement agencies throughout North Texas….. most notably those affiliate organizations chartered by City Council or formed pursuant thereto such as Arlington Heights Police Department…. From 1990 thru 1993 main production activities were conducted out of Fort Worth under then current location(s)…… finally having relocated there permanently about 2004….. all manufacturing operations have since been shifted back eastward…… currently located (in)….
