The museum was started by two local businessmen who donated their collection of old firearms to the town. The collection grew rapidly and by 1978, the museum had amassed a significant amount of firearms. In order to keep up with advances in technology, the Gun Magazines Museum began digitizing its holdings in 1992. Today, it contains more than 250 items from around the world. One of the museum's main attractions is its collection of vintage weapons dating back to 1868. This includes rifles and pistols made by both American and European manufacturers. Many of these pieces were donated by individuals or businesses who weren't interested in selling their firearms but wanted them preserved for future generations. Another popular attraction at the Gun Magazines Museum is its display of ammunition containers from all over the world. This was because handguns were not yet banned in America and there were no laws prohibiting possession or use of firearms for self-defense purposes. During the Revolutionary War, small arms fire was used sparingly due to concerns about civilian casualties. However, on July 4th, 1775, Patriots from Boston unleashed a systematic gun battle against British regulars that left over 100 dead and hundreds injured. This event is sometimes cited as the first time firearm usage killed an individual in America. The high fatalities rate from gun battles during this period motivated manufacturers to develop new types of rounds specifically designed for shotgun rounds which helped reduce civilian deaths. With handgun regulation becoming more strict following the Revolution, magazines became an important part of militia arsenals across America. In 1871, when Congress passed the National Firearms Act (NFA), it prohibited citizens from possessing any “firearms which can discharge a shot weight more than eighteen ounces” without a license from a federally licensed manufacturer or dealer. The act also made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess any firearm whatsoever without parents or guardian consenting thereto; however this law did not take effect until January 1st, 1934 when amended by Public Law 89-618. From 1934 until 1968 there was no federal ban on magazine capacity larger than 15 rounds per cardstock magazine (.45 ACP only). In 1968 President Lyndon Johnson signed executive Order 9066 which barred all privately owned assault rifles with detachable magazines greater than 5 rounds per cardstock magazine (i metric). This order effectively closed off all access to these weapons by Americans who had previously possessed them without consequence(s). After President Johnson’s Executive Order came into force most Americans began returning theirassault rifles to dealerships where they had been bought Previously under Operation Paperclip which targetted American citizens owning foreign-made assault rifles with extended magazines that could hold up to 10 rounds per cardstock magazine(i metric). Because OFE regulations apply only To muzzleloaders) many Americans continued purchasing AssaultRifles even though they are now considered Illegalweapons
