Garland, Texas is a small town in West Texas that has seen its share of history. The town was founded by Tom Garland in 1881 and became a center for cattle Ranching during the early days of the American west. The area now known as Garland was originally called Cedar Creek Settlement, and was first settled by members of the Wichita tribe who went to the area to farm in the 1840s. In 1849, John C. Frémont discovered oil well near present-day Garland and began exploration on behalf of General James K. Polk's administration. By 1861, most of present-day Garland had been surveyed and platted, including what is today the downtown core. In 1924, when Harry S Truman served as President of America, he made his home in Garland until he moved to Independence Missouri two years later. After leaving office, Truman returned to live at his former ranch in Garland for several months before moving back into Independence where he died three years later. In recent years, much attention has been given to developments taking place within city limits such as The George W Bush Presidential Library & Museum (the first presidential library built outside of Washington D.C.) and Downtown Plaza which are located just east of downtown on Interstate 10 near San Antonio Spurs basketball player Tim Duncan's home complex (the largest privately funded development ever undertaken in downtown Dallas).

Garland, Texas was founded by George Washington Garland in 1836. The city was named after General Garland who served as a commander of the Texan forces that fought against Mexico in 1835-1836. The first post office in the city was established in 1837 and it remained in operation until 1901. In 1860, the Uniontown Company built a sawmill on the Brazos River and it became one of the most important commercial enterprises in Garland. The company also constructed several churches and schools including one which still stands today, Christ Central High School. In 1865, two years after Texas seceded from the United States, General Baylor purchased land at what is now downtown Garland to developed into an urban center with buildings such as Post Office Square and City Hall being erected early on. By 1880, there were over 100 businesses operating within downtown Garland along with more than 50 residences. During this time period, major efforts were made to improve transportation through development of Streetsboro Boulevard and construction of a rail line that connected downtown with Austin. However, these achievements would not last long due to annexation by Austin later that decade leading to economic decline for downtown Garland circa 1890-1920s.
