Garland, Texas is home to the last remaining Gunnery School in the United States. The Gunnery School was founded in 1867 as a school for boys to learn how to use firearms. It closed in 1957 and was reborn as the Garland Tactical Center in 1987. The center now teaches gun safety and marksmanship classes for adults and youth. The Gunnery School’s founders were inspired by a school in England that taught firearm safety and marksmanship. After studying at theGunnery School, American silent film star James Cagney learned how to shoot firearms. Cagney used his fame to help finance the school’s creation, which opened its doors on October 1, 1867. In 1907, the Gunnery School moved from its location on Fannin Street into what is now called Haddrell Hall on North Lamar Boulevard in Garland. At that time, it became one of only two schools in Dallas County that offered gun training courses for women (the other being Sam Houston High School). In 1961, when Garland was renamed “Garland City” after Mayor Don Armstrong, the Gunnery School moved back into Haddrell Hall and remained there until it closed in 1987. Today, theGunnerySchool remains an important part of Garland history with classes teaching handgun safety and marksmanship to adults and youth alike!
