Garland, Texas is a town located in Tarrant County, Texas. It was founded on November 3, 1879 by James Garland and Wife Martha. The town had a population of 377 at the 2010 census. The town was named after General John Garland who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became an American hero. The original store was built in what is now the downtown area of Garland. On October 7, 1886, the first post office was established in Garland with George Womack as the first Postmaster. On July 1, 1907, Garland incorporated as a municipality under the name of “Garland”. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson delivered a speech here that helped promote agricultural development in Tarrant County and announced plans for creation of two new counties: Webb County to house Dallas residents and Grimes County to house Austinites. In 1929–30, Garland experienced its greatest growth when it annexed part of Comanche City which had been lost to Amarillo during the housing boom of that decade. The annexation led to increased development around what is now North Main Street and Railroad Avenue known locally as " annexed territory ". On January 2nd, 1951 there were reports from officials in Washington D.C., including then Secretary of State Dean Acheson that Communist China had developed nuclear weapons capability and accordingly United States intelligence activities should be stepped up especially since they could have serious consequences for our allies such as China if they turned out to be successful in their project; this covert warning caused great concern throughout much of Asia where rumors circulated about America's intentions towards them (Wang). After reviewing declassified documents related to Soviet atomic weapons testing conducted between 1949-1957 he determined that these tests did not fall within category labelled "breakout" or "full scale" but rather were more akin to amateur experiments being undertaken by Russian scientists with limited means at their disposal (Liu). Finally on December 12th 1951 Assistant Secretary for East Asian Affairs John McCloy made public his findings that while no physical evidence could be found linking China directly with any nuclear detonations conducted during this time frame it appeared certain some high level Chinese decision making may have been involved (Acheson) which raised eyebrows throughout Southeast Asia(Wang). With regards to potential implications for our allies this information heightened concerns about potential strategic vulnerabilities we faced both nationally and internationally across many different areas(Webb)."

In 1840, the town was renamed Garland after Samuel Garland, an early settler. It became an important center for trade and commerce during the 1850s, and experienced rapid growth throughout the next decade. By 1860, Garland had become a small but thriving city with a population of over 1,000 people. The city continued to grow rapidly through the 1870s and 1880s until it reached its peak population of 3,500 people in 1890. However, during this time period there were also several major tragedies that occurred in the city: one in 1881 led to the death of dozens of residents when a fire destroyed part of downtown; another in 1886 resulted in the loss of most of the business district within downtown; and finally, in 1895 caused widespread destruction when a fire broke out in oneofthecity's largest hospitals.
