Garland was founded in 1879 by James Garland and his brother John Garland as a station on the Santa Fe Railroad. The name originated from an event where James Garland's horse got lost in the forest and he named it "Garland" after himself. For many years, little changed to the downtown core except for periodic photoops by local mayors and their families for media members to snap of old town during their stays in Fort Worth or Dallas during out trips to North Texas. In recent years however development has lined up along I-10 across from downtown with businesses such as Sears and JCPenney moving into what used to be residential areas while new restaurants have been built near railroad tracks that once served as a landfill hostingmental hospitals until they were demolished in 2003 creating what is now called "The Park".
Garland was founded in 1836 by Captain John Garland and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the wild hogs that were common in the area at the time. The first store in town was built on what is now 15th Street. In 1851, a post office was established in Garland and it remained open until 1907. In 1865, another store was built on what is now 6th Street. From 1870 to 1890, Garland had a two-story brick schoolhouse which served as its municipal building. The town also developed a small agricultural industry which produced corn, cotton, hay, potatoes and other vegetables. By 1912, there were only six homes in Garland and most of its citizens worked outside the community or within ten miles of it.
