On November 1, 1837 Brazoria Bayou became Galveston Bayou after a vote by the Commissioners Court to rename all creeks and bayous in Travis County after state officials or local dignitaries. On December 12, 1838 BrazoriaBayou passed through Houston and joined Buffalo Bayou south of downtown Houston. In 1846Houston annexed parts of Harrisburg Township (now Thoroughfare Road) including most of what is nowGalveston Island National Wildlife Refuge; this annexation increased Houston's port area and made it an important military center during World War II with its concentration on shipping munitions to Japan from shipyards along Buffalo Bayou. From that time until 1964 much of present-dayGalveston island was part of Harrisburg Township east of I-10 just north of UptownHouston

At this point,Galveston had become a major seaport with over 100 ships moored at various points along Buffalo Bayou. On September 14th, 1850 – three years after Startons arrival –Galveston received its charter from US President James Polk as an American port town with jurisdiction over all other US ports east of Mexico City except Miami Beach (then part of Cuba). The following year saw many innovations when it came to port administration including: construction of wharves northwest of downtown; establishment of early firefighting/rescue services; and opening up trade with China through Vultures Point on Sam Houston Boulevard just south of present day Main Street (now called Quincey Street). With growth came disease which took hold in 1851 when a severe storm surge caused flooding that destroyed much property within minutes leaving thousands homeless or stranded ashore. With only available boats available for rescue operations until 1865 there were numerous fatalities both from injuries sustained duringthe storm surge itself or from diseases such as smallpox spread by mosquitoes during their time ashore which also stricken humans aboard ships disembarking at Galveston Harbor In 1865, cotton fields began replacing shipbuilding activity as Galveston’s main sourceof income however manufacturing did not fully take off until after World War II due to advances made in truck production
