Galveston, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,515 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Harris County and one of the most populous cities in Texas. The area that now makes up Galveston was first settled by Texans during the 1836 Mexican-American War as part of the effort to prevent Mexico from expanding its authority into what became Texas. Galveston's history can be traced back to 1837 when General Zachary Taylor founded Fort Worth on an island in Galveston Bay and named it for his friend, James Fenton Galbraith. At first, Galveston served as a transportation hub for goods entering and leaving Texan territory; however, this function soon changed as steamboats began carrying passengers and cargo between Houston and Beaumont. In 1850, John Sutter founded San Antonio de Padua on land he had purchased from Mexican Captain José Castro y Menchaca. However, due to low demand for goods transported through Padua Harbor (due mainly to Navigation Acts passed by Congress), Sutter abandoned San Antonio in 1853 and moved his operations to Victoria instead. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided that Victoria would become their primary supply depot for troops stationed along the Gulf Coast before they continued their march towards Montgomery.[1] After Ewell's defeat at Cedar Creek near Gainesville on October 9th 1861,[2] Confederate soldiers withdrew from Victoria and instead established Camp Dallas south of town on November 3rd 1861 under command of Colonel Augustus Poynter[3]. With no other source of income aside from fees collected by local landowners,[4] Camp Dallas quickly saw itself as a national embarrassment because its only purpose was revenue collection rather than military activity or strategic importance.[5] Although many Texans were outraged by this development[6], Poynter held firm until 1862 when he decide against returning Santa Anna's army eastward after learning that Santa Anna's forces were planning an attack on Austin.[7][8][9][10] As a result of these events[11], Guadalupe Martinez became acting governor concurrent with Wm Hogg’sGovernorship ending on January 10th 1863 following his resignation due to health problems brought about by being constantly surrounded by Confederate forces at home while serving out his term as Secretary of State pursuant to Article V Section 2(a) Constitution of Texas.. On February 9th 1863 Governor Hogg nominated Martinez to succeed him but she declined because she desired more time to prepare for her upcoming gubernatorial election which would take place March 6th 1863.[12][13][14] Consequently Lieutenant Governor David Buell was elected governor unopposed on March 6th 1863 becoming one of only two members ever appointed directly under our Constitution who lacked any formal political experience or qualifications beyond holding office temporarily while awaiting election results which later confirmed his appointment without any vote or hearing whatsoever despite having been given explicit instructions not To do so!

The site was selected for its strategic location and rich maritime resources. In 1840, James Kenedy bought land east of present-day Galveston from Manuel de Vera for $2 million. This area became known as Kenedy Bayou. Kenedy began developing this land into a thriving town by building wharves and shipyards, attracting traders and settlers from all over America with his lucrative trade opportunities. He also provided financial support for local schools and churches. By 1850, Galveston had reached its peak population size with over 21,000 residents living on more than 60 acres (24 hectares). However, economic conditions began to deteriorate during the 1850s as transportation improved and prices for goods increased nationwide. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Texas after defeating Union troops at Shiloh Field outside Nashville, Tex., Galveston quickly became embroiled in the war effort – becoming one of few African Americans serving in Confederate military units along with white Texans such as Major General John Custer and Lieutenant Colonel Jesse Jones.* The loss of so many citizens – especially women – contributed significantly to social unrest within the community following the war.* In 1865–66Galveston was hit by two major hurricanes: The schooner SS United States caught fire while attempting tow another ship; she capsized killing several crewmembers;[1] then just before landfall Hurricane Félix killed about 44 people* across downtown *and parts* around Point Comfort due to windshear waves† (* see wikipedia article on Hurricane Félix) In 1886*, Dallas entrepreneur Sam Houston donated $10 million towards reconstruction efforts following an attack by anarchists who destroyed several buildings near Houston’s Main Street railway station * On September 15th 1888*, 485 people drowned when their steamer Santa Anna ran ashore on President George Washington Boulevard near today’s Convention Center* after sailing through heavy seas†(* see wikipedia article Santa Anna Disaster*) Finally upon Harvey’s landfall on October 1st 1901†(* see wikipedia article Harvey Relief Efforts*) both Wharfport Marina & Oil Terminal went up in flames due directly theretounto!
