Galveston, Texas (originally called Galveston County) is a city in the U.S. state of Texas on the Gulf Coast. The population was 895,651 as of July 2015, making it the third-largest city in Texas and its fifteenth-largest city by population. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area, which had a total population of 2,545,046 as of July 2015. The name "Galveston" comes from two places: one was a small settlement near Austin on Brazos River that served as a staging post for American forces during the Mexican–American War; and another was originally used to describe an artificial island in the river that was built by General Sam Houston to provide living space for colonists who had relocated there from New Mexico after hearing reports of golds being found there. As Galveston grew into a major port and commercial center in the late 1800s and early 1900s with its numerous shipbuilding yards and industry related to oil production and refining, it came to be known as "The Venice of America." Houston began expanding rapidly into Galveston's waterfront area beginning in 1837 when Houston named his new municipality after then-Governor James K. Polk based on recommendations from Houston's friend and business associate Sam Houston. By 1840, most of what is now downtown Houston had been developed including what is now Minute Maid Park along Fannin Street west of Bagby Avenue between Main Street (now Hearn Street) and Post Oak Boulevard. In 1845, Galveston Island became part ofHouston when it absorbed Montrose Parish east side along Lighthouse Point Road from Galveston County line southward to Buffalo Bayou within City Limits limits [1]. The first white settler in present day Harris County arrived in 1836 aboard USS Constitution under Captain John Rodgers[2] following news that land located at Wharton Bayou on Presidio Island had been awarded to Major Robert Ewing[3]. Commodore James Cook chartered HMS Beagle on 17 February 1838 under command Of Captain Samuel Eliot Morison[4], bound for California with specimens collected by Lieutenant Edward Bridgwater during his circumnavigation around South America during 1840-1841 expedition led by Admiral Sir John Franklin[5],[6]. On 5 March 1840 he sailed into San Juan Fuego bearing maps prepared by Rear Admiral George Bassett showing Spanish Islands including Santiago de Cuba[7], Santa Clara de la Vega,[8] but no Isla de Cuba or Isla de las Aguas Cubanas [9],[10]. After disembarking his passengers at Guadalupe Island about 20 miles northwesterly off Puerto Rico he made landfall near Trinidad Roads Bluff some 22 miles due west past Carlsbad Caverns about 12N latitude longitude before continuing northwesterly across flats towards Truxtun Pass where he anchored 10 miles offshore about 3W longitude high water mark having reached Christmas tree Point just past Cape Lopez Light House 9 N latitude longitude while continuing northwestward reaching point 1 S latitude longitude before anchoring offshore again off Lookout Pass 6 W longitude high water mark 4 N latitude Longitude well clear of shoal areas which he pronounced very good place for shipwrecked seamen.[11],[12][13] He named this place San Miguel because Diego Rivera portrayed him receiving Holy Communion here (after landing)[14],[15], but later changed it also to Santiago de Cuba after returning home(16).[17],[18][19],[20] With cotton plantations becoming more important than sugarcane farming throughout much of North America during the antebellum period,[21], slave labor became increasingly necessary for large plantations such as those run by owners such as Andrew Jackson,[22][23] US Senator Daniel Webster,[24][25], Governor Robert Denton,[26][27]), US Congressman Sylvester Judd Flood [(28])and others throughout much southernTexasduringthe antebellum period until emancipation efforts commencing with President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation effective January 1st 1865 brought an end both slavery within Confederate StatesOfAmericaandthe slave trade Acrossstate lines ThroughoutmuchofNorthAmerica。Duringthe Reconstruction Era following World War II until Thurgood Marshall compelled all Southern states desegregationAllwhiteinstitutionsbecameinallegitimatefederal institutions subjecttoEqual Rights AmendmentrequiringequalprotectionunderlawandafterelectionofallcitizensbylawfulelectionofaCommissioner
