Galveston, Texas is known for its maritime history and for being the home of the USS Galveston (LST-5) which was sunk in 1945 by a Japanese submarine. The USS Galveston Museum was established in 1953 to preserve and teach about this maritime heritage. The LST-5 sank on December 7, 1945 after mistakenly striking an oil tanker while en route from Japan to Pearl Harbor. The incident led to international condemnation of Japan and helped fuel American support for the United States war effort. The history of gun targets in Galveston, Texas begins with the development of the first pistols in 1836. The handguns were designed to be fired from a long arm, such as a rifle or shotguns, and were not intended for use with handguns. The first target shooting game was developed in Galveston by Capt. Samuel Denton in 1837. The game was known as "dandridge." By 1840, batteries had been set up at various locations throughout Galveston to allow residents and visitors to shoot at targets created from shipping containers, postcards, bottles, tin cans, and other objects. Gun target shooting became very popular in Texas during the 1850s. Gun manufacturers began producing target pistols specifically for this type of shooting and soon there were many different types of targets available to shooters across the state. In 1857, Captain John Sibley set up a battery on State Street in downtown Galveston that allowed people to shoot at both small (1-inch) bulls’ heads and 1-foot models made from wood or metal plates. These guns were known as “Sibley” guns because their designer, Capt. John Sibley himself furnished them to customers free of charge. During the late 1800s and early 1900s gun Target Shooting Association tournaments took place all over the United States each year commemoration of America's birthday (4th of July). At these tournaments Targets would often be placed along sidewalks near public thoroughfares where contestants could fire off rounds into dummy cannons which would then return fire back at the shooters until one contestant won an achievement plaque inscribed with such things as “First Place” or “Best Time” etcetera

Galveston, Texas (August 29, 1836 - November 11, 1895) was the second-largest city in the United States and a port on the Gulf of Mexico. It served as a commercial center for southwestern Texas during the 19th century and into the 20th century. The city's history is reflective of its location along a major shipping route. Galveston became an important seaport due to its strategic location at the mouth of Houston Ship Channel and because it was accessible by steamboats from New Orleans. The first English settlement in what is now Galveston County was made in 1795 by traders seeking passage to Louisiana through the Biscayne Bay area of Florida. After natural resources grew scarce in South America, entrepreneurs began searching for new markets for their products in 1817 when Captain James Cook discovered Brazos Island and named it after Prince George of Wales (later King George III). In 1837 merchants founded The Houston Navigation Company with John Kirby as CEO to develop land at Galveston Bay. By 1840, Houston had become Texas' largest city with over 100,000 residents. The Battle of Galveston actually took place on September 8, 1898 near present-day downtown Galveston between American forces led by General sulfur Lewis and Spanish forces under Admiral Juan de Fuca led by Francisco de Torres y Costilla y Pacheco. De Fuca's force lost most of its equipment while trying to disembark his flagship Santa Anna from HMS Victoria after leading a successful attack against American gunboat USS Constitution off shore; that day also saw one of naval history's greatest moments when USS Monitor towed British ironclad HMS Warrior out to sea after she successfully defended herself against three torpedo attacks from USS Constitution during her battle with CSS Alabama off Cape Lookout on May 24, 1862
