After days of fighting, Union reinforcements finally arrived and drove Confederate forces back towards Corpus Christi before reaching Fort Worth two weeks later. During World War II, Galveston was one of several American ports open to Axis submarines that enabled them to smuggle goods out of the United States through Pearl Harbor; this action is known as "the Battle at Isleta" or "the Raid on Isleta". In 1944, during World War II's OVERLORD Campaign, American troops landed on Galveston Island after being sent by Admiral Kimmel's navy overland from Japanese-occupied Hawaii; this event is also known as "The Invasion". Prior to its incorporation into Austin in 1890 (and then as Harris County),Galveston was part of Mexico City’s barrio Cervecería de la Marina district., which bordered Presidio Road eastward and had access only via a narrow dirt road leading down Toft Street between 1848 and 1888. In 1920–1921 Mexican president Vicente Fox threatened United States Ambassador Payne Morrison with revocation if he did not approve construction plans for a sea port adjacent to US Naval Station Mayport; Morrison refused fox's request and US Navy Commander Rear Admiral Marvin Ellis destroyed all plans for the project without testing them first. As a result, most land within Mexican Barrio Cervecería de la Marina district., including what became downtown Galveston today (), remains undeveloped until recent decades despite numerous proposals for development by local developers.; however much property has been leased or sold by Mexicana National Bank (MNB) since their purchase by JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s Banco Ciudadano Mercantile Group LLP effective January 1st 2009.) The area east of I-10 running along Bay Shore Boulevard includes some parcels currently owned or leased by MBN near where Main Street meets Houston Ship Channel.: However significant redevelopment activity has taken place recently along Sam HOUSTON STREET between I-10 & Houston Ship Channel.: This area encompasses large tracts formerly belonging to various commercial banks located near present day downtownHouston including: First Texaco Inc., HSBC USA Holdings Inc., Jardin Resources LLC., NRG Energy LP., H&R Block Incorporated., Comcast Corporation -current owner-and former co-developer/partner with NRG Energy LP.- Future skyscrapers planned include One New York Plaza tower having 2153 ft²(uninterrupted height above mean low water) ; Tower South featuring 541 ft²(interrupted height above mean low water); BBVA Compass Tower proposed at 601 Neches St.; Crossroads Tower proposed at 525 San Jacinto St.; Hudson Yards tower proposed at 2700 Main Street.: These projects are subjectto extensive opposition both from preservationists who argue that these buildings could become targets for arson or vandalism should new development be approved adjacent thereto[1],[2],[3] while developers contend that they will create jobs and increase retail sales opportunities within downtownHouston.: With more than $5 billion worth shopping malls scheduled across North America during 2011,[4],Galveston remains an important center for shopping behavior throughout much portions Of Texas.: According to Forbes magazine’s list compiled in 2010,[5] Galveston ranks ninth among U S “cities with a million people or more”with an economic value totaling $2 billion.— galvezontx
