Galena Park is a small town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Galena Park is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Galena Park was founded in 1876 as a small settlement on the banks of the Brazos River by German immigrants. It became a community after being platted in 1879 and named for the mineral galena, which was then an important source of revenue for settlers. The name "Galena" may be derived from either Germanic meaning "place where lead or silver is found" or Scottish Gaelic meaning "a white rock". The first post office was established in Galena Park on July 8, 1881. By 1886, there were ten businesses and two churches in Galena Park. In 1902, three acres (120 m2) of property were donated to establish what would become the park site. The donation allowed for construction of a school and playgrounds as well as other civic improvements such as waterworks and streetscape design. The first baseball game played at Galena Park took place on April 10, 1903 against Lamar University team Haysville (now Hays County). In 1916–17, work began on creating a new cemetery within the park site that would eventually accommodate 2,500 bodies. After years of planning and fundraising by local citizens and organizations such as picnic committees and Rotary Clubs, construction finally began in 1932 and completed twelve years later. The original cemetery closed following its dedication but remains open to visit today; it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. In 1935–36, John F Kennedy visited Galena Park while he was campaigning for president; his campaign stop resulted in large crowds flocking to see him play softball at one of the parks' public stadiums that summer night In 1966–67 when Dallas Cowboys running back Barry Sanders made history playing his final football game at Arlington Stadium before moving up to management with owner Jerry Jones he attended a pre-season game against Westlake High School Tigers; this event helped build support among Dallas Cowboys fans for Sanders during his candidacy for UPI's Player Of The Year award later that year . In 1990s-2000s many popular Austin music acts including Limp Bizkit headlined shows at venues like ACL Live! throughout Austin prior to their album releases nearby ; during this time some stores near ACL Live! closed due to noise caused by Limp Bizkit gigs
Galena Park was founded in 1836 by two members of the Texas Rangers, John H. Smith and David W. Garland. The area had been under Mexican control for years, and the Rangers were called on to help drive out the Mexicans. Galena Park was named after a local mineralogist, who found lead ore here. The first post office in Galena Park was established in 1839. In 1861, Galena Park became part of the independent Republic of Texas. In 1865, it became a municipality when it joined Austin as a city.
