Galena Park, Texas is home to one of the largest concentration of shootings in the Lone Star State. The city has experienced a number of gun massacres, most notably on November 3rd, 2018 when a gunman opened fire at a Christmas party killing 12 people and injuring 26 others. Galena Park is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, on the banks of the Galena River. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Galena Park was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. They named it after a nearby cave where they found galen (a type of coal). In 1836, General Sam Houston discovered and mined silver near modern-day Galena Park, and made Galena Park his headquarters. The post office was opened in 1836, and soon became known as one of the most important towns in Texas because its location made it an ideal spot for wagon traffic on the then new Ulysses S Grant National Road (now I-35E), which linked Dallas to Austin. In 1871, a group of investors purchased 1,500 acres (620 ha) east of present-day Galena Park from José de la Cruz y Luna for $5 per acre ($100 per km²). They named their town "Houston" after General Houston's capital city at that time, Mexico City. After years of growth and development within Houston's limits only sparsely populated areas remained outside thecity limits with various small villages dotting the periphery until 1945 when annexation formed what is now suburban Dallas into Houston proper as part of Mayor Ann Richards' master plan called "The Great Dividing". At this time much larger portions including much later sections contiguous with Galena Park were annexed to Arlington County while less populous areas northwesternDallas became Irving and easternDallas Fort Worth were absorbed into Denton County further east near State Highway 114/I-635 en route to Austin proper. Today there are over 20k people living within city limits with more than 10%ofthe total population living inside downtown Houstons boundaries since annexations have occurred anathema to attempts by suburbanites to keep their communities largely undeveloped against wishes by planners who saw potential annexation markets beyondtxlege lines as well as tax incentives available from government coffers should those markets become realities . Development has proceeded apace despite some high profile controversies such as plans for high rises overlookingctx riverbanks that community members successfully lobbied againstand construction permit denial due to concerns about traffic impact along newly developed neighborhoods adjacentto riverfront

Galena Park is a town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. Galena Park was founded in 1887 by Emmett W. Shaver and his wife Maria Edwards Shaver on land that now includes most of the eastern edge of the Dallas suburb of Fair Oaks. The name "Galena" comes from an early settler's discovery of lead ore near present-day Galena Park. It post office operated from 1892 to 1905. In 1907, Galena Park became part of the newly formed city of Dallas when it was annexed by the city through annexation ordinance No. 2269. The original shopping district around Post Oak Road and Elm Street known as "The West Side," which encompasses much of what is now downtown Galena Park and portions of Fair Oaks, date back to at least 1886 when Eastern Star Clothing Company's store opened on Elm Street between Post Oak Road and Eastland Drive in what is now Old City Hall Square (now Science Museum District). At one time or another every major department store within a mile radius had its own annexe withinDallas annexed into other municipalities; this clustering began to break down after 1915 with the opening in Dallas of new malls (such as Love Field) which made it more difficult for merchants to locate close to their customers' homes. The last major annexation took place in 1925 when Midway Shopping Center came under annexation by Arlington Heights; however this also resulted in Midway being turned into an open-air mall with no internal mall configuration whatsoever save for two levels containing anchor stores - one anchored by JCPenney and Sears & Roebuck while the other anchored by Kmart - both closed within a few years after opening due to competition from new malls outside the city limits.[1] In 1932, Shaver developed a small piece of land west off Post Oak Road extending into what is now Fair Oaks called "Shaver Ranch".
