The community gradually grew up around its railway station and two schools – one for white children and one for black children – which operated until 1980. By that time, it had developed into an important commercial center with several shopping malls and restaurants. In 1926, Galena Park annexed Alice Paul's farmstead which had been within its limits since 1851. The annexation helped make Galena Park one of the most politically active communities in Fort Worth during the 1930s due to its position as an enclave between two large cities with opposing political views. The post-World War II economic boom brought new development to Galena Park, including several high-rise buildings constructed along Elm Street between Loop 410 and Hwy 621 (now IH 35). Many of these buildings still stand today, including Hotel Arlington (now Marriott) and Bank of America Tower (now One North Financial Plaza). During this time period, many prominent residents of Fort Worth such as former Mayor Tom Landry and Congressman Lloyd Bentsen reside in Galena Park. In recent years,Galena Park has experienced gentrification with increased residential population density along Elm Street and IH 35 corridor between Loop 610 & 621/Browns Road SW - giving rise to concerns about traffic congestion and possible displacement of local businesses by more affluent residents who are unable or unwilling to comply with city regulations that limit accessory uses on properties adjacent to schools or other public purposes. There has also been some criticism from residents about how "gentrified" areas have become magnets for crime rates which have led police officers to focus their patrols around old industrial areas rather than inner-city neighborhoods where there is greater need for law enforcement resources
The Galena Park area was first settled in the late 18th century. In the early 19th century, it became a center for cattle and cotton farming. In the 1860s, Galena Park was home to a large slave market. The area also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
