This change resulted in heavy traffic congestion within Houston's boundaries which led to the development of many new neighborhoods withinHouston Heights such as Montrose Village and River Oaks

Galena Park is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas and it was founded in 1872. It is located on the banks of the Brazos River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Dallas. The town became a center for cotton cultivation and cattle ranching after Mexican settlers moved into the area in the early 19th century. In 1916, Galena Park was annexed by Dallas as part of that city's annexation of Arlington Heights. In 1928, Galena Park incorporated as a municipality under its own government and adopted a name inspired by its location: "Galena Prairie". The townsite at Galena Park had been inhabited by Native Americans since before European settlement began in this area. A group of Scots-Irish immigrants known as the Hennepin Settlement arrived around 1836, settling near what is now Interstate 10 and Highway 144. By 1848, they had built two fortified posts on land between present-day Santa Fe Trail Road and FM 1960 to defend their territory from Comanche raids; these Fort Hennepin posts are still standing today within walking distance of each other on Montrose Avenue in Galena Park. In 1872, an act was passed by the Texas Legislature which provided for organized township formation throughout rural Texas; Galena Park Township formed from sections of Kaufman County west of Houston along present-day I-10 east to Loop 610 southward until it met up with Mansfield Township further east on US 90/I-10 north of downtown Dallas. The first post office opened in 1873 with Wm J Fenton as postmaster; postmasters were also elected officials at this time). The town's first mayor was Mgr John Everson (1876–82). Growth slowed after World War I because much cotton production shifted to larger plantations in Mississippi and Alabama; however, following prohibition during World War II, growth resumed thanks to new industry including truck driving and manufacturing based upon automobiles; however, economic recession hit Galena Park hard during the late 1990s due to consolidation among several large companies withinDallas/Fort Worth region

The area now known as Galena Park was developed in the late 1800s as part of the city's streetcar system. The streetcar system served as a transportation route linking different parts of Austin with each other and with neighboring cities. As Galena Park grew, it became an important commercial and cultural center. In 1916, the city of Austin annexed the nearby neighborhoods of Lamar and Montrose to form Galena Park. At that time,Galena Park consisted of just over one-half mile square. Today,Galena Park is home to a number of businesses and restaurants, as well as several schools and parks.
