When Galena Park was settled in 1876, it was an unincorporated community located in Galveston County. By the early 1900s, the town had developed into a large agricultural center with a population of around 1,200. In 1916, Galena Park became the first municipality in Texas to be created from land that had been donated by millionaire John D. Rockefeller. The new town was named for nearby Holston Springs, which Rockefeller had purchased in 1895. Galena Park continued to grow and develop until the late 1960s when it declined as a result of significant economic changes within Texas and nationally. However, the town has since revived and is now an important cultural and economic center for Galveston County. The latest incarnation of Galena Park is home to a number of restaurants, stores, churches, and other civic organizations.

Galena Park is located on the edge of an agricultural area that has been in its present form since 1836 when a group of Texans led by Colonel James Fenton founded what would become Galena Park. The name "Galena" comes from a Wichita Mountains peak that served as their original headquarters. The first store in what is now Galena Park was built on Main Street in 1892 by A.J. Goudreau and his son-in-law, John Cavanaugh. By 1904, there were six stores in town; three saloons and three grocery stores operated under one roof. What began as just a few families farming land around their homes soon became an agricultural community with over 1,000 acres (500 ha) cultivated during the early 1900s alone! In 1918, local ranchers met to discuss creating a park which would be open to all citizens for hunting, picnicking and other recreational purposes.
