Galena Park is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 43,513 at the 2010 census. Galena Park was founded in 1881 as a small community on the northwest edge of what is now Dallas. It became a suburb of Dallas in 1963 and thenDallas municipality in 1978. Galena Park grew rapidly after its incorporation as a city and has seen an increase in population growth since 2000. The downtown area is home to several large shopping malls, including three within one mile of each other – Plano Mills mall, Farmers Branch Mall, and Mesquite Mall – making it one of the largest shopping centers in North America. The history of Galena Park can be traced back to 1881 when some settlers decided to settle on the Northwest Side of Dallas because there were few places for them to congregate without fear of being lynched or attacked by Native Americans who lived around the area. The first house built in this area was called "The Cabin." In 1882, business people from McKinney bought land east of present day Arlington Drive near State Road 259 and built a cabin which they named "Fenton's Grove." This initial location served as their headquarters until they moved closer to what is now Elmhurst Avenue and started building more homes. By 1886, Fenton's Grove had been renamed "Galena" after nearby Helena Springs mineral water source that made goods available for sale there such as flour and groceries (the first store opened at this location). In 1903-1904, two brothers named Dickey purchased 160 acres (65 hectares) northeast of present day Elmhurst Avenue along Worth Road from J P Kehoe Sr., also known as John Pease due to his ownership stake in cattle ranching activities adjacent to Worth Road between Milford Road and Elmhurst Avenue). They began construction on what would become known as Dickey Ranch which stretched from Worth Road northward into present day Ennis Township before terminating at FM 528 southbound just east of US 75/I-635 exit #2 off I-635 eastbound shortly after reaching FM 528A where it continued past FM 529 southbound before terminating at I-635 westbound about 8 miles south of downtown Dallas proper. From here they managed various aspects associated with ranching operations until 1946 when all operations were transferred from Dickey Ranch to permanent buildings located near GMP product storage complex on Grapevine Rd., later becoming known as Ennis Ranch Headquarters LLC which remained operational until its closure in 1992 following passage by state statute providing for single family housing developments throughout Metroplex including those within City Limits subject thereto; see Annotated Statutes 1935TexS No: 54 §1 et seq.; 1965 TexReg No: 414 §§3 et seq.) Galena Park was first settled in 1836 by the Galen brothers. The area was named after a mineral vein in Illinois that produced lead and silver. The town was founded on a site that is now known as McAllister Park. In 1838, the Galena Springs mineral colony was established, and Galena Park became one of its many towns. The town grew rapidly due to its defensive properties, and by 1840 it had a population of 100 people. By 1845, the population had reached 500 people. During this time, Galena Park developed into an important transportation center because it served as the central point for goods from Illinois and Kansas City. In 1865, the Ulysses S Grant Administration moved the seat of government from Topeka to Galena Park so that central government would be closer to the people. On November 3, 1870, Galena Park incorporated as a municipality with a population of 1,000 people.
