Galena Park is a town in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. Galena Park is part of the Houston–Sugar Land metropolitan area. It is bordered by Montrose to the north and northwest,Houston Heights to the east, Midtown Houston to the south and west, and Lakewood Ranch to the southeast. The name "Galena" means "stone quarry." In 1846 John Hogg (1792-1867), an Englishman who had come to Texas as a trader with Martin Van Buren's administration, organized a group of men who built what became known as Hogg's Mill on Buffalo Bayou near present day Galena Park. The mill became one of the most important cotton mills in Texas. In 1859 James Fenton erected a house on this site which he called "Fenton's Grove". He served as mayor from 1865-68 and 1870-72; his wife Elizabeth came from England in 1814 and died in 1888. In 1889 he named his house after politician Andrew Johnson (1809-1865). Mrs. Fenton was buried there until her death in 1935; her husband continued to live there until his death two years later. In 1912 Galena Park was annexed by Houston and renamed Montrose Heights after its neighbor across Buffalo Bayou from where it started out being quarried for stone for new homes then becoming an agricultural center supplying sugarcane farmers with building blocks for their estates before landing on its current location as a commercial district richly endowed with several high schools including Rice University also located just outside of downtownHouston about 10 minutes away walking or bicycling distance only making it very accessible right off IH10

Galena Park was founded on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1836 by General John C. Fremont and his army as a military post to protect settlers from Native Americans. The area now includes Galena Park, Dallas, and Arlington Heights. During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Texas Rangers were stationed in Galena Park to prevent Mexicans from entering the state illegally. In 1861, Galena Park became part of the newly formed United States after the American Civil War ended.
