Gainesville, Texas is a town of just over seventy-five thousand people located in the eastern part of the state of Texas. The town was founded in 1881 by J.W. Gaines and his wife, Anna Bibb Gaines. The first store in Gainesville was opened by Mr. Gaines and his brother-in-law, John Gregg, on Elm Street. In 1893, the first school was built in Gainesville. At that time, it was the only school in the town and it served as a day care for local children until 1949 when it became an elementary school. In 1955, the first high school in Gainesville opened its doors to students from all over central Texas; this led to the present day designation of Winters High School as one of the top schools in Texas for educational opportunities for students of all ages! One of the most important aspects of development for gainesville during its early years were its relationships with other towns and villages within miles or kilometers radius of its borders. These relationships helped to provide essential services such as transportation, water supply, social events/meetings, and even military support necessary to keep life going during these difficult times. Today, both Cedar Park and Arlington Heights are full-time suburbs with their own populations; Gainesville remains an unincorporated community within Hockley County. In 2002, the Town Council voted to annex acreage adjacent to Interstate 30 east of I-30 because it felt that annexation would be necessary in order for the town's infrastructure to keep up with growth in nearby Cedar Park and Arlington Heights. The annexation went ahead without any input from the local community council or citizens. On July 14th, 2011 it was announced that Mayor Roy Barnes had died after a long battle with cancer at age 86 years old; his wife Pat Barnes took over as mayor until she resigned on December 3rd effective immediately due to health concerns about her husband's future health condition should he continue serving into his seventies or eighties like he did previously plan on doing. On December 5th newly elected mayor Pat Barnes signed an ordinance proclaiming January 1st 2012 as "Mayor Roy Barnes Day" in memory of her husband who passed away just over one year earlier at 86 years old having battled cancer for many years prior thereto
