Gainesville has a rich history of target shooting, dating back to the early 1800s. The city was founded by pioneers in 1879, and soon became known for its able shooters. In the 1920s, Gainesville became home to the first successful rifle range in Texas. Today, it is an important center for target shooting throughout South Texas. The earliest references to target shooting in Gainesville date back to 1881. At that time, the city was named after General James Hogg, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as commander of cavalry on the Texan frontier. Hogg’s family had been involved intarget practice for many years before he moved to Gainesville. In 1882, local gunsmith Wm. Davenport built a small but effective rifle range at what is now called University Park Drive and Elm Street. This range quickly became popular with locals and visitors alike, and served as a model for all later Rifle Ranges in town. By 1902, there were six such ranges operating within town limits; each consisted of two stages (a ground floor and upper story), an outdoor seating area with targets extending out into a 50-yard open firing arc, two indoor ranges (one on Main Street east of College Avenue and one on West Main Street west of College Avenue), a storage building/shooting gallery/range room adjacent to each indoor range (on First Avenue north of Elm Street), and an observation tower overlooking both indoor ranges from University Park Drive southward

This system allowed shooters to position their rifles in any direction so that they could shoot multiple rounds at once without having to worry about moving the stand. The Dorman target holder remained popular until it was replaced by the Harris Target Holder in 1907. For many years, HarrisTargetHolders remained one of the most popular target holders on the market because they were efficient and easy-to-use. Eventually, manufacturers started creating more complex target holders that required more than just two metal plates for stability. By 1912, an Italian manufacturer had developed a model called the “Gigante” which featured four panels that allowed shooters to place their rifles in any orientation so they could complete multiple shots without having to move their stand. By 1938, all major firearm manufacturers had introduced varieties of target holders which ensured that shooters would always be able to find a reliable and efficient way to hold their targets.

Gainesville, Texas is one of the oldest towns in the state of Texas. The town was founded on December 12, 1836 by James W. Gaines and his family. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson’s home in Tennessee. In 1872, Gainesville became the capital of Grayson County. In 1906, Gainesville was incorporated as a city and has since grown to become one of the most populous cities in Texas. The cityscape of Gainesville is unique and consists of many buildings that date back to its early days. One such building is the original courthouse which still stands today and is used for municipal court hearings and other legal proceedings. Other notable buildings include City Hall which replaced the old courthouse after it burned down in 1901, Annex Building which served as a jail from 1892 until 1938, and Gadsden Street Railway Station which serves as both a transportation hub for locals and visitors alike and also provides access to local businesses throughout the city center. One significant event that happened in Gainesville during its early years was the Battle of Summit Springs on November 9th, 1836 where Confederate forces under General Robert Epps attacked an American force led by Colonel John Pemberton while they were resting at Summit Springs Settlement north of present-day Gainesville. The battle resulted in a loss for both sides with only three soldiers killed on each side before sunset; however, this did not stop General Robert Epps from continuing his march towards Austin subsequent day following what would be known as “the Cavalry Raid”[1]. During Reconstruction following the Civil War, much activity took place within Grayson County which eventually led to growth within both Gainesville and surrounding communities including Stonewall Jackson Heights[2]. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans left Grayson County for Northern states due to harsh skin color laws enacted post-war[3]. However, many African Americans who remained decided to settle in rural areas outside of Texas due to lack thereof opportunities within their own states[4]. This migration ultimately caused some tension between African Americans living within publically owned white society while also leading to increased competition for jobs among whites throughout rural areas across North America[5] (See: "The White South's Response To black Migration" ). Despite these tensions., gainesville experienced rapid growth throughout the late 19th century due to advances made by railroad developers along Gadsden Street railway station (see photo below). With new development taking place along Gadsden Street railway station – such as hotels/motels being built near downtown square – more citizens began moving into central Gainesville from surrounding rural areas making it difficult for white residents who had been there since long ago to keep up with changes.[6]
On November 3, 1836, the town of Gainesville was founded in the Texas Panhandle by James P. Gaines and his family. The town slowly grew as people began to settle there, and in 1851 it became a city. In 1907, Gainesville was named one of the "Ten Towns of Texas that Made a Difference" by the Texas Legislature.
