In 1915 local businessmen Sam Bowie (founder of JB's BBQ) and Alonzo Wickersham developed a plan to build a sugar refinery on land between Third Street and Lamar Avenue NE which would create jobs for Catholics working in the plant while giving rise togrowth adjacent to campus that continues to this day including much of downtown Gainesville
