Gainesville, Texas is a small town located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas on the banks of the Rio Grande. The name Gainesville is derived from Spanish and means "a place where grow corn." Gainesville was originally a part of Tejas County and named after General Antonio Delgado, who fought in the Mexican Revolution and later became president of Mexico. In 1865, the United States acquired lands east of the river for military purposes. This area became known as Fort Worth County. A cotton gin and stockyards were built near present-day Gate City to process cotton goods for sale to American soldiers stationed at Fort Worth. In 1871, James Hogg established a sawmill on his land south of town that would become one of the largest lumber mills in Texas. In 1892, Leland Stanford purchased some land north of town and founded Stanford University; today it is one of America's most popular universities with more than 40,000 students enrolled statewide. In 1907, Harry Emerson Fosdick bought some land east of town and founded Fosdick Ranch which Today provides much needed grazing for cattle ranchers during winter months
