Gainesville is an unincorporated community located in Cooke County, Texas, United States. The population was 553 as of the 2010 census. It lies on the Gainesville-Edgewood Hills Road, about twelve miles southwest of Wichita Falls. The community was first settled in 1882 byodus and gentry from Wichita Falls. In 1903, the town name was changed to Gainesville after a local water tower. A post office opened in 1904, and remained open until it closed in 1967. A general store and restaurant were built in 1907, and remain extant today as businesses in Gainesville. The original schools were built between 1912-1915; however, they have all been replaced or demolished over time. Today there are only two houses remaining from that period: one dating back to 1915 and the other dating back to 1922. In 1957, a grocery store and convenience store were added to the mix; however they continue to operate today as separate businesses under their current names (Gainesville Grocery & Convenience Store and Gainsville BBQ). In 1973, a new high school was built adjacent to the old two-story school buildings; however it has also been replaced or demolished multiple times since then. Today there is only one house remaining from that period: this one dates back to 1915 but has not been preserved currently

Gainesville is a city in Wood County, Texas. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Wood County since 1887. Prior to that, it was the capital of Hudspeth County. The first people to live in Gainesville were two groups of Kiowa Indians who camped near present-day Gainesville on or about October 5, 1847. They built their winter home on what is now Old Hickory Road. A second group of Kiowa Indians camped near present-day Gainesville on or about December 6, 1847; they also built their winter home there and named it "Gainesville". On July 26, 1887, Hudspeth County was organized and Gainesville became its county seat. On November 3, 1915, Hudspeth County merged into Webb County and Gainesville became part of Webb City Limits within that new county. On February 1, 1922, Webb City Limits merged into Austin City Limits and Gainesville became an official city within that new metropolitan area
Gainesville was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after General Sam Houston, who helped to establish the Texas Republic in 1835. Gainesville quickly became a center for cotton farming and cattle ranching. In the late 1800s, the town experienced some growth as a result of its role as an agricultural center. However, due to economic factors such as population growth and competition from neighboring towns, Gainesville eventually lost its status as a major city during the 20th century. Today, Gainesville is a small town with a nucleus of residents who continue to live there while engaged in various businesses and activities.
